Class Rules & Company Policies

Unruly or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated, and may result in expulsion without a refund. The use of phones, tablets, or laptops is not permitted in class. Please do not write or draw on the desks or tests.

Please arrive on time for class.If yo­­­­­u are more than 15 minutes late you will not be allowed to stay.

Attendance at all ten classes is mandatory. You can miss up to four days, but you’ll have to make them up when they’re offered again. There is a $10 fee for make-up classes. Ask your instructor for make-up dates or call 410-686-1718.

If you miss more than four classes, you will be required to restart the course from the beginning. This is a state law. If you must restart, you’ll be charged $15 for each class attended, $50 for each hour of driving completed, and a $20 registration fee.

For classwork you’ll receive an MVA Student Workbook. You must bring your workbook to every class. If you lose it, you can purchase a replacement for $5.

You must score at least 80% on the final exam in order to pass the class. If you fail the final, you may try again on another day. There is no extra charge.

YOU’LL BE ON THE WAITING LIST WHEN YOU HAVE MET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
1) Finished all ten classes. 2) Passed the final exam. 3) Paid the full tuition and any applicable fees. 4) Obtained a learner’s permit and given us your permit number and expiration date.

For in-car lessons, we offer pick-up within a limited range. If your address is outside of our pick-up range, you’ll be asked to meet at one of our locations. When you have a driving appointment, please allow for possible lateness due to traffic or other issues.

The instructor will evaluate and grade you on all aspects of your driving. During the final hour you must score a minimum of 80% to pass the course. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to get a learner’s permit as soon as possible and practice as much as you can before your lessons. IF YOU ARE NOT PASSABLE, YOU WILL HAVE TO COMPLETE A 60-MINUTE REEVALUATION, WHICH COSTS $50.

The six hours of driving practice must be completed as three 2-hour lessons. You may request a specific instructor, or a female or male instructor, but we cannot guarantee that your request will be fulfilled. If we must send a substitute instructor for your lesson, you will still be expected to complete the lesson, and if the lesson is cancelled a fee will be charged.

LATE CANCELLATIONS AND MISSED APPOINTMENTS WILL RESULT IN A $50 FEE. If you need to cancel or change an appointment, you must notify us no later than 3pm on the prior business-day. If your appointment is on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, you must call us no later than 3pm on the Friday beforehand.

If you have a medical condition or are taking medication that could affect your ability to safely operate a vehicle, you must notify a manager of ABC before scheduling your behind-the-wheel lessons.

The MVA skills test may be taken in one of our cars. The price starts at $130 and increases based on time and travel requirements. You should make an appointment with the MVA first, then call us to reserve a car. We recommend giving us at least two weeks’ notice.

If you must withdraw from the course, you will receive a partial refund. You’ll be charged a $20 registration fee, $15 for each class attended, and $50 for each hour of driving completed. You will be given records of the instruction you received, which can be transferred to another school. Refunds will only be issued if requested within 6 months of your first class.

Drivers Ed Final Exam Answers

Tuition for the course is $369, but you may start with a $100 down-payment. The remaining balance must be paid within six months. If the tuition is not paid in full six months from your first class, a $50 late fee will be added to your account. Each six months thereafter, for as long as the balance remains unpaid, an additional $50 late/reinstatement fee will be added to your account, until the balance equals the original tuition. If you have questions about this or concerns about your ability to pay, please speak with us before the six months is up.

There is a $25 fee for returned checks.

There is a $20 fee to transfer to another ABC classroom location. If you need to transfer, call our office at 410-686-1718.

Certification is done online – you will not receive a paper certificate. When you finish the course, we will inform the MVA within one business day. It takes up to three additional business days for the MVA to certify you, so schedule your MVA test at least four business days after your final lesson or class with ABC. Also confirm that the information we have on file for you is correct, or your certification might not be validated.

You must finish the course within three years. Student accounts are deactivated and records are destroyed three years from date of the student’s first class.

This course is offered in cooperation with the Motor Vehicle Administration and is intended for persons wishing to complete the classroom instructional requirement for becoming a licensed Maryland driver. Classroom meets the 30-hour classroom requirement portion of the Maryland Driver Education program. Classroom instruction includes student and parent/guardian orientation, discussion of speed and space management, basic maneuvering, reducing risk and personal factors influencing operator performance and collision avoidance. Each lecture is led by a certified Driver Education Instructor

Driver Ed - Final Exam Md Bliss

This course is offered in cooperation with the Motor Vehicle Administration and is intended for persons wishing to complete their behind-the-wheel instructional requirements for becoming a licensed Maryland driver. Students will practice various aspects of safety while operating an automobile with a certified driver education instructor.

NOTE: CSM has resumed behind the wheel training. This class is currently granted petition. Students who have completed TRA-9250 will be invited to register in the order by which they have completed with permission to register and a link to registration.

TRA-9400 Driver Improvement Program

The Driver Improvement Program (DIP) is required by Maryland Law for individuals who have a suspended or revoked driver’s license. DIP may also be required for certain violations cited under a provisional license. Individuals participate in the Driver Improvement program through referral by courts or an administrative law judge.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Pass the Driver Improvement program with a score of 80% or better
  • Recognize the types of violations that could result in suspension of driving privileges and how to avoid them
  • Practice safer driving habits and understand that it is their responsibility to take the initiative for learning and obeying all motor vehicle laws

Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death for young adults ages 16-24. Out of 60,000 Colorado students who completed the Alive at 25 program, the program reduced deaths from crashes by 97%! Alive at 25 is a highly interactive behavior modification program delivered by law enforcement personnel. Through interaction and role play, students are persuaded to take responsibility for their actions, adopt safe practices, and focus on healthy decision making and to form their own conclusions about the consequences of risky driving behaviors. Alcohol, distractions, peer pressure, speed factor and more are discussed.Students MUST be ON-TIME!

TRA-9700 National Safety Council Certified Defensive Driving Program

The National Safety Council Defensive Driving Program is an interactive instructor-led program that provides drivers with knowledge and safe driving techniques to prevent collisions and violations. The program focuses on collision prevention through hazard recognition and the application of collision-avoidance techniques. In addition, the course addresses common driving violations that result in collisions and how to change driving habits to eliminate moving violations. The emphasis is on identifying and choosing safe and legal behind-the-wheel behaviors and actions.

Driver Education Instructor

CSM offers the required training necessary to become a licensed Driver Education Instructor in Maryland through the Motor Vehicle Administration as well as classes for those already licensed.

TRA-9000 Driver Education (Classroom and Behind the Wheel) $359

The Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) requires this course for those wishing to obtain a Maryland Driver’s License for the first time, regardless of age. The College of Southern Maryland requires that the student attend an orientation accompanied by a parent/guardian or mentor if student is a minor. The three hour orientation will be held during the first classroom date of the class and the student must bring their Maryland learners permit to the orientation. This orientation class will acquaint the student and the parent/guardian or mentor with the 1) college requirements; 2) components of the Maryland’s Graduated Licensing Law; 3) parent/guardian or mentor obligations (60 hours in car practice).

Maryland's Graduated Licensing Law requires that Driver Education consist of 30 hours of classroom instruction in operator and vehicle control, space management, basic maneuvering, reducing risk and personal factors influencing operator performance, environmental conditions and collision avoidance. The law also requires 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction by a licensed / certified Driver Education Instructor. (CSM offers four - 1½ hr sessions.)
